Lavender fields in Provence
During the summer months of June and July, Provence is synonymous with lavender, which creates a purple aromatic haze. A road trip through Provence is the perfect way to explore the country. Far from the madding crowds that can appear in the summer months along the coast, the inland country can be the perfect antidote. The lavender route can be approached in a number of ways, but I think the best approach is from the north of Provence down to Route de Manosque in the south. It takes you through the dramatic Mont Ventoux and Luberon areas of Provence, stopping at magical towns such as Venasque, Gordes and Apt. Stay at a beautiful property in the region, enjoy the delicious Provençal cuisine and relax by the pool after a day of exploring the countryside.
Places to see:
PLATEAU DE VALENSOLE
This is perhaps the most iconic and popular destination for lavender enthusiasts. The vast plateau is covered with vibrant purple lavender fields, creating a stunning visual spectacle.
SAULT
Located at the foot of Mont Ventoux, Sault is another fantastic spot to see lavender fields. The countryside surrounding the town is dotted with lavender farms, offering picturesque views and plenty of photo opportunities.
ABBEY OF SENANQUE (ABBAYE NOTRE-DAME DE SÉNANQUE)
This beautiful Cistercian abbey near Gordes is surrounded by lavender fields. The contrast between the ancient stone buildings and the vibrant lavender creates a truly magical atmosphere.
THE LUBERON REGION
The Luberon is scattered with charming hilltop villages and stunning landscapes, including lavender fields. Villages like Bonnieux, Roussillon and Ménerbes offer fantastic views of the lavender-covered hillsides.
GORGES DU VERDON
While primarily known for its dramatic canyon and turquoise-colored river, the Gorges du Verdon area also features lavender fields along its scenic roads and in the surrounding countryside.
ALPES-DE-HAUTE-PROVENCE
This department is home to several lavender-growing areas, including the Valensole Plateau and the Verdon Natural Regional Park. Driving through the countryside here, especially along the Route de la Lavande, offers glimpses of lavender fields against a backdrop of mountains and picturesque villages.
AROUND APT
The town of Apt and its surroundings, including the villages of Rustrel and Saignon, are also known for their lavender fields, particularly during the flowering season.
CRILLON-LE-BRAVE
This is a charming village perched on a hill in the Vaucluse region, offering stunning views of the Mont Ventoux and the surrounding countryside.
VENASQUE
A medieval hilltop village known for its well-preserved historic architecture and beautiful countryside views.
GORDES
Famous for its striking hilltop location and well-preserved medieval architecture, Gordes is one of the most beautiful villages in France. The Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque, located nearby, is a picturesque Cistercian abbey surrounded by lavender fields.
